Aromatherapy for Dogs

In-person aromatherapy sessions are available for dogs in the Chicagoland area. Remote services are available to those living anywhere. Learn more below!

The use of essential oils dates back to ancient Egyptian times with the earliest recorded use of these aromatic oils dated in 3000-2500 B.C. Using aromatherapy for animals has gained a lot of traction in the last few years and has become increasingly studied as a result. I received my Level I certification in Animal Aromatherapy in 2017 from the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) through Ashi Aromatics.

Aromatherapy is an art and a science, and when it comes to dogs it can be even more complex. Aromatherapy for animals is not as simple as diffusing lavender and calling it a day. Did you know there are three different lavender essential oils all with different properties? There are so many factors to consider when using aromatherapy with animals.

Safety should be the first priority. If you’ve been told to use essential oils neat (undiluted) on an animal or to put essential oils in an animal’s food, you’ve been told wrong. Both neat or ingested essential oils for animals (and even for some humans) can be extremely dangerous and harmful.

In-Person Canine Aromatherapy Appointment – Chicagoland Area

This in-depth aromatherapy session ranges from 30-60 minutes based on your dog’s participation and how he or she is enjoying the essential oils process. Every dog reacts differently. Your dog will have a role in choosing the essential oil(s) to suit his/her needs. It’s an amazing process to watch in person. As the pet parent, you will also play a role and learn how to safely use essential oils on your dog.

You’ll be given sample sizes of the essential oils recommended for your dog and carrier oil samples as well. You’ll also receive information on how to purchase full-sized bottles of the recommended essential and carrier oil(s). You will walk away with an aromatherapy support plan for your dog including how, when, and why, to use your recommended oils. Multiple sessions can be purchased for ongoing support.

Essential oils should not be used in place of veterinary care, but they can be used to support or assist your dog in many of the following ways:

  • calm nerves, stress, anxiety or fear
  • aid in skin care
  • aid in wound care
  • build the immune system
  • repel fleas, ticks and other pests that love our dogs
  • help a sick dog in the recovery process (kennel cough, canine flu, etc.)
  • help a dog with cancer, diabetes, or IBD boost their organ function, immune system function, etc.
  • and many more!

Aromatherapy involves the use of the purest essential oils extracted from different parts of a plant to purify, detox, balance, calm and heal the body, mind and spirit. Essential oils are 75-100 times more concentrated than dried herbs, and to use them properly with dogs takes patience and learning.

The safe use of animal aromatherapy is critical to ensure dogs receive the maximum benefits of aromatherapy without compromising their safety or taxing the body and immune system. All of my aromatherapy consultation services include information on how to safely use essential oils on dogs and why this is extremely important.
